October 30 Chris' Jaw Surgery UpdateWell, I am finally getting around to posting the pictures that I've been talking about. The pictures are the focus of the most current chapter of our life... Chris' jaw reconstruction surgery. We decided about 12 months ago that he should go through with the tedious maxillofacial surgery recommended by the Ortho-Surgeon on base. We've been dreading the time leading up to it, but I can say now, that I am glad that the 'hard part' is behind us. Now, it is just recovery.
He had surgery on Oct 18th. It required two surgeons and took a little over 8 1/2 hours to complete (not including recovery). These talented doctors broke and then reconstructed both the upper and lower jaws. The funniest thing is that his chief complaint afterward was the pain on his arm from the blood pressure cuff (from repetative pressure checks every 5 minutes through the duration of the surgery). The immediate result was overwhelming, and I am so THANKFUL that my mom was there to let me cry on her shoulder. After realizing the task at hand (and getting a grip on my emotions), we have since just focussed on him getting back to normal--whatever that is.
He is looking more and more like himself every day. He is on a soft food diet and not permitted to bite anything. It's amazing how creative you can get when you are hungry! He can currently talk, but tomorrow he gets his mouth rubber banded shut (to force his muscles to learn his new bite) until Thursday night, so it will be quiet around the house.
The splint in his mouth should be removed between 6-8 weeks post surgery. TrackbacksThe trackback URL for this entry is: http://the-baird-family.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!269FB7D3802AA5C9!126.trak Weblogs that reference this entry
